Uplifting Story: Teen with Downsyndrome hikes to Everest base camp

History Made: U.S. Teen with Down Syndrome Reaches Everest Base Camp

It’s more than most will ever be able to say they accomplished: climb to an incredible 17,598 feet and set foot within Mt. Everest’s rocky, snow-glazed Base Camp.
Eli Reimer, a teen from Bend, Ore. who also has Down syndrome, made history by hiking 70 miles with his father, Justin Riemer, and a team of seven other people to the famed Himalayan mountain’s lofty staging area, all to raise money and awareness for the disabled. Everest has two base camps — one in China (North Base Camp) at 16,900 feet and another in Nepal (South Base Camp) at just under 17,600 feet; Eli and his father climbed to the latter. Just getting to one of Everest’s Base Camps is a major challenge, and climbers then have to wait, usually for several days, to acclimatize to the high altitude before continuing up the mountain.
According to WBTV.com, when Eli and his father stepped off their return flight to L.A. International Airport on Friday, March 22 — shortly after World Down Syndrome Day on March 21 — they received a warm welcome from supporters.
“We’re able to celebrate that as we departed Katmandu with [Eli] just completing something that as far as we know, no other teen with Down Syndrome [in the U.S.] has done, so it’s monumental,” said Justin Riemer. In an email to TIME, Reimer noted that a 35-year-old man from the U.K. was the first “and only other person” with Down syndrome to climb to the Base Camp.
Eli and Justin’s trip reportedly raised $85,000 in donations for Justin and his wife Tamara’s organization The Elisha Foundation, which offers support to families “affected by any disability.”

Here are a few links.  One is to the Time article by Steven Brill about the high price of health care in the United States.  Another article is a rebuttal of Steven Brill's article.  The third article provides a totally different opinion in regards to how we should pay for healthcare.  Like many of you I don't know the answer to how to fix healthcare.  Just some articles to get the brain juices flowing.

Here's a link to a new video I made.  It is of the Bent Over Row.  One of my favorite exercises.  This video is much better than the last two!  I'm learning and improving day by day.  Someday I may actually fix some of these typos even.

Decided one challenge that I would like to do at the end of the 30 day diet and workoutathon would be the TRX 40/40 challenge.  Here's a link to the challenge:  http://fitnessanywhere.com/blog/trx-40-40-challenge-workout

I will post the video of how I do.

Here are two videos I created of healthy shakes.  The Whey almond shake is a good post workout shake or breakfast shake.  The blueberry banana shake would make a great breakfast shake.

Here are the links:

Today's workout with my lovely wife:
One set of 14 pull ups
250 meter run
One set of 15 atomic push ups with TRX
250 meter run
One set of 15 each side squeezes* with TRX
250 meter run
One set of 20 knee ups
250 meter run

Later
20 push ups
30 middle crunches
20x2 down each side
20 push pus
30 middle crunches
20x2 side crunches
20 push ups
30 middle crunches
20x2 side crunches

Post 3:  March 26th, 2013 I worked out before track practice but all I completed was one set of 135 pound overhead press for 10 repetitions before my team showed up.  But when I returned home I was able to get a baseline of where my strength was at.  After warming up I did a maximal rep pull up test.  I finished with 13 pull ups.  I then completed two more sets.  The second set I stopped at 7 and did 3 jump pull ups to get to 10.  The third set I stopped at 5 and did 5 more jump pull ups to reach 10.  Obviously, after my last post you can see that  I am completing roughly half of the pull up repetitions that I was able to do at the time.  The other strength test that I utilized was a max push up test and I was especially bothered that I only completed 30 repetitions.  So in 28 days I will retest and see what the difference is.

Second post.  So over the course of the last year and a half I have really slacked on my training.  In October 2011 I was extremely fit.  I could do more than 25 pull ups in a row, squat 315 for 20 repetitions and bench 110 pound dumbbells for 10 repetitions.  I was 225 pounds, 6 feet tall, and ran a 5:50 mile.  So today will be the first update of the next 30 days.  I will post pictures of me over each week.  I have changed my diet and will post my dietary journal for each week.  To start the month I weighed in at 230 pounds on March 25, 2013.  As I said the first pics will be posted in the coming days.  Hopefully, you will find some motivation or useful information to use over the course of the next month.  I will be posting videos of health shake recipes I've created and other foods that are great to eat to help lose weight.
